The Service of Biomedical Engineering in the Department of Medical Physics is recruiting for an Assistant or Associate Attending Biomedical Engineer. This faculty position will report to the Chief of Biomedical Engineering and the Department Chair and will assist with supervision the daily operations.
The Biomedical Engineering service optimizes the use of technology to assure the safety, operating effectiveness, and regulatory compliance of electronic biomedical instruments used in patient care, laboratory functions, and research. Additionally, the service investigates new and evolving technologies and their potential integration into or use in the clinical environment. The service is divided into five sections: Clinical and Radiological Engineering, Biomedical Electronics, Biomedical Systems, Biomedical Inventory Management, and Mechanical Instrumentation and Engineering.
This position will regularly interact with institutional, industrial, and vendor colleagues, therefore strong communication skills are essential to promote clarity of mission, both within and outside our organization.
Principal responsibilities include:
- Develop departmental operating policies and procedures, implement, and manage programs to maintain and improve the quality of services and efficiency, ensuring activities are within regulatory requirements. Act as technical consultant to the medical, nursing, and other staff, as required.
- Plan and perform technology assessment, capital asset management, strategic planning, facilities planning and design. Conduct pre-acquisition evaluation, specification determination, service contract review, acceptance and safety testing, and maintenance and design modification of devices.
- Develop and implement technology business plans including financial models, risk assessment and cost benefit analyses. Negotiate and manage service contracts. Plan and manage financial budgets. Collaborate with physicians and scientists, and with outside industries in research and technology development.
- Participate in clinical research by applying, monitoring, and defining emerging technologies in biomedical engineering as applied to cancer treatment. Contribute to the development and enhancement of technology through scientific work in collaboration with medical staff and research scientists.
- Supervise and perform incident investigations and solve highly complex technical problems. Communicate to manufacturers about issues with medical devices; ensure appropriate response.
- Be responsible for personnel leadership, management, direction, supervision, and evaluation. Promote and develop professional growth of the engineering staff at all levels.
- Manage, participate in, and develop educational programs for training clinical and technical staff, interns, and fellows. Ensure that medical and technical personnel receive appropriate training and education in the operation of medical technology.
- Organize and manage quality assessment and improvement activities, suggest innovative solutions to complex problems, and introduce new technologies for consideration. Participate in regulatory affairs and accreditation surveys (The Joint Commission). Manage institutional programs including Laser Safety, Electrical Safety, and Medical Equipment Management.
