Job Summary

The Orthopedic Physician Assistant (PA) plays a vital role in the healthcare team focusing on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of the pediatric patient with musculoskeletal conditions. Key responsibilities of the Orthopedic Physician Assistant include conducting patient evaluations, developing treatment plans, patient education, and providing guidance on rehabilitation and preventive care. Other duties include the ability to ascertain a thorough patient history and physical examination, order and interpret radiological and laboratory tests, prescribe medication, order and carry out therapy and management plans, document patient care services within the EMR, and perform procedures within scope of practice and demonstrated competency. The Orthopedic Physician Assistant will report to the Orthopedic APP Manager. 

Job Specific Duties

• Contributes to Physician’s effectiveness by identifying short-term and long-range patient care issues that must be addressed; providing information and commentary in pertinent deliberations; recommending options and courses of action; and implementing physician directives. 
  
• Counsels and educates patients and their families. 
  
• Creates and sustains a therapeutic and ethically sound relationship with patients. 
  
• Differentiates between the normal and the abnormal in anatomic, physiological, laboratory findings and other diagnostic data.
  
• Initiates emergency resuscitation and stabilization as necessary and complies with hospital safety regulations and infection control. 
  
• Manages general medical and surgical conditions to include understanding the indications, contraindications, side effects, interactions and adverse reactions of pharmacologic agents and other relevant treatment modalities.
  
• Orders, alters, or adjusts controlled and non- controlled medications for in hospital patients. 
  
• Participates in performance improvement activities, quality of care initiatives and research of special projects. 
  
• Performs procedures as identified in delineation of privileges. 
  
• Prescribes non-controlled medication for patients. 
  
• Assesses patient health by interviewing patients; performing a physical examination; ordering pertinent lab and radiology; and obtaining, and updating medical records. 
  
• Works effectively with physicians and other health care professionals as a member or leader of a health care team or other professional group. 
  
• Precepts APP students.  
  
• Performs selected clinical skills and procedures as delineated in specific Medical Staff privileges (Delineation of Privileges). 
  
• Recognizes need for physician consultation and guidance as indicated within experience and scope of practice.

Qualifications

Minimum Job Requirements

• Master's Degree of an approved program leading to eligibility for licensure as a Physician Assistant
  
• Physician Assistant Licensure issued by the State of Florida - maintain active and in good standing
  
• NCCPA - Ntl Commission on Certif of PA Certification by The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCPAA) - maintain active and in good standing
  
• American Heart Association (AHA) BLS - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment.
  
• Level II Background Check
